My telegram No. 221.

In the absence of Mr. Kodama in Shanghai I thought

it well to give Mr. Sonoda, Managing Director of Central

China Development Company, an explanation of scheme to

support Chinese national currency. He expressed appreciation

and showed every sympathy with the project, while commenting that the first reaction of the press and public opinion in

Japan must be expected to be bad.

Incidentally, he confirmed information reaching me

from other sources that there is now good prospect of an

early opening of the Yangtse niver "in some form or other".

Addressed to Foreign Office No. 225, repeated to

Shanghai No. 186.
